Energy is one of the most important resources for the production of over 30,000 OBO products. All the production facilities at the Menden location alone require around 18 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year. The energy yielded by the PV system covers up to 30 per cent of the electricity consumption

The OBO renewable energy system product range was implemented at the Menden site and is thus helping to shape the energy revolution.

After all, energy is one of the most important resources for the production of over 30,000 OBO products. All the production facilities at the Menden location alone require around 18 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year.

Such a high level of power consumption comes with great responsibility.

That is why OBO is taking various measures to address this responsibility. An important milestone on this journey was commissioning a PV system at the Menden location.

Some of these PV systems were installed on the roofs of the Metal Competence Centre and a neighbouring logistics hall. Both buildings offer ideal conditions for installing the system, such as a large enough area and sufficient light.

The OBO PV systems yield a high potential for savings

The energy yielded by the PV system covers up to 30 per cent of the electricity consumption. The rest of the energy required for the Menden administration and Metal Competence Centre is covered 100 per cent by green energy.

OBO switched to green electricity at its Menden location in 2012. The pure origin of the green power is tested and certified according to strict guidelines by the TÜV Süd monitoring authority.

OBO’s own PV systems span a surface of 40,000 square metres, which is to be expanded in the future.

The annual output is approx. 2,000,000 kWh, resulting in an annual saving of 871 tonnes of carbon.

In comparison, to save this amount of CO2 through biological means, around 40,000 trees would have to be planted each year.

Good to know: In winter, there is also a positive outlook. Even in harsh winters, the snow crystals reflect the sun, meaning solar power is still produced on a smaller scale.

For example, 600 PV systems and 200 metres of mesh cable trays for cable routing were installed on the 112-metre-long roof.

These modules were fastened with the help of the Magic PV Flat Pro flat-roof system from OBO Bettermann. The mounting system does not use any screws or tools, meaning simple installation and an enormous time saving. The practical thing here is that the OBO Bettermann products offer maximum flexibility and therefore an external lightning protection system was able to be integrated into the overall design.

With a capacity of around 250 kWp, it is a medium-sized system. Fire protection ducts were also added.

OBO thus acts as a complete solution provider, combining PV installation systems, cable management, fire protection and lightning protection.
